While there isn't anything wrong with not knowing, once you know the details I think that you'll see the flaws. At my last employer we discarded a job candidate because he knew a bit about RAID and still thought that software RAID was "Slick". I guess that it's viable for some folks, but in any kind of corporate environment downtime costs far more than the hardware. Hardware is the least expensive part of doing business, if your employer takes a few minutes to count the lost time/productivity of employees for a day or more while you restore/rebuild a server that lost one disk with Software RAID, they should see the merit of having a hardware RAID solution where the recovery from a lost disk is functionally zero impact on the users.
