The MSX turbo R has special refresh circuit. On this machine, the DRAM memory 
interface is build into the same chip as the R800 microprocessor. The DRAM 
memory interface controls the refresh of the DRAM regardless of the Z80.

As far as I know, on other MSX systems, the memory refresh is driven by the 
Z80 or the Z80 compatible processor integrated into the later models of the 
MSX engine.
