If the characters on screen turn into garbage, it could also be
related to VRAM integrity problems. Have a look at the VRAMs, writing
a small program that tests the VRAM shouldn't be that difficult.
However, if the VRAM is defective, there should be some more evidence
of that i.e. garbage in the startup screen.
