The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at Dublin City University, Ireland, is offering a three-year PhD Scholarship for a Japanese native speaker to do collaborative research with Symantec, Ireland in the area of Controlled Language and Machine Translation. This scholarship is funded by Symantec and Enterprise Ireland.

 Funded Research Opportunity in the Field of Machine Translation and
 Controlled Language

The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland, along with Symantec Ireland are offering a funded research opportunity in the field of machine translation and controlled language. The research will be carried out jointly at Symantec Ireland’s localisation department in Dublin and at DCU. The funding will cover fees and a stipend of €18, 800 per annum for a maximum of three years. The researcher will divide his/her time between the two locations. The successful candidate will initially register for an MA and, subject to satisfactory performance, may progress to the PhD register after 1 year. The successful candidate(s) may be asked to spend some time in the Symantec Tokyo offices. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed.


   Researcher Profile


     Compulsory qualifications:

   * Native speaker of Japanese
   * Excellent level of spoken and written English
   * Undergraduate or post-graduate degree (at least 2:1 or equivalent)
     in one of the following fields: Translation, Computational
     Linguistics or Localisation with a strong interest in translation
     technology research (machine translation specifically and
     translation memory/terminology management)
   * Must be willing to live in Dublin on a full-time basis for three
     years starting immediately


     The following are desirable:

   * Proven record in research (e.g. undergraduate or post-graduate
     dissertation on a relevant topic)
   * Excellent communication skills
   * Ability to work both independently and in a team
   * Flexibility and willingness to travel
   * Experience with programming languages such as PERL or Python
