I don't think the GDS directory is being used at all. It was an implementation introduced a while back for using Google as a data storage medium for the Perl client. See the email discussion below: https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00442.html
The PHP and CherryPy reporter engines should not be dependent upon it. So the server/gds directory is safe to remove (from my perspective) from the mtt repo. It'll still be available in the mtt-legacy repo if folks want to use it as reference.
