MANCHESTER United are not planning a multi-million transfer blitz when the
January window opens in the New Year.

The Reds will tomorrow present their 39.3m profit, a 22 per cent increase,
to shareholders at the plc's AGM at Old Trafford.

Reports have suggested that 20m of that will be sanctioned for a mid-season
war chest for Sir Alex Ferguson.

But United chief executive David Gill, who'll be at the AGM in his new
capacity as Old Trafford's top man following the shock departure to Chelsea
of Peter Kenyon, is warning speculators that an `if it ain't broke don't fix
it' policy is likely to prevail when the post-Christmas transfer scramble
gets underway.

"I don't think we will be going into the transfer market in a big way in
January," he told M.E.N. Sport. "We have had some discussions about it and
it is all still being reviewed by Sir Alex Ferguson, his staff and myself.
Same again

"I think whatever we do in January will be consistent with previous years.

"The manager doesn't normally do major transfer work in mid-season even
before we had the window. It is premature to reach any conclusions as to
what we will be doing."

Once again a top-grade front man to bolster the champions three-man senior
strike force of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Diego Forlan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
is seen as a priority by fans and critics alike if the Reds are going to
push on with their Premiership and Champions League challenges.

Fergie's only two mid-term purchases during the last decade of success have
been forwards.

In January 1995 Andy Cole was bought for a then British record of 7m from
Newcastle and two years ago Diego Forlan was captured from Independiente for
7.5m.

But talk of a 20m kitty for Ferguson to plunder for new faces is wide of
the mark.

"I don't think we are going to need ridiculous amounts of money in January.
Alex Ferguson won't ask for that because there is nothing major to be
fixed," insisted Gill.

"We developed the squad in the summer so we'd be challenging for all the
honours and we are challenging so why would we want to make big changes in
January?"
