I won't get to see the game till later today, but ignorance has never
held me back before. From the online news reports, it seems we
started badly but improved as the game went on. But whether Tierney,
Pugh, Bardsley, etc will soon threaten the first-teamers is debatable.

My gripe (as it is every year except the last) is with Fergie's
league cup policy of playing so many young players. It's more about
giving first team players a rest than giving young players
experience. Just how much experience do they get? One game, two if
they're lucky, and then they're out. And it's experience obtained in
a team of fringe players and youth so it's hardly first-team
experience, either.

As fans, we like to win every game so it's disappointing to be booted
out so soon in any competition. Last season we went all the way to
the final because we played stronger teams (almost certainly because,
last November/December, it was starting to look as if we'd win
nothing and not even qualify for the CL so we needed some insurance.)

The best policy, surely, is to play 3 or maximum 4 'youth' players in
an otherwise strong side. If things go well, the youngsters can be
subbed by others of their ilk in the second half. The same number of
youngsters get to play but, crucially, we improve our chances of
winning and so can offer them all another game in which to earn more
genuine experience. As it stands now, that's the end of
the 'experience'. Bardsley et al probably won't see first-team action
again until this time next year when Fergie adopts the same policy.

Big rant over a fairly small point but I just don't think enough is
gained by doing what we keep doing. There are points in favour of the
policy (eg "resting" first teamers and ditching an unwanted
competition) but I ....... [another 15 pages of the same repeated
points has been deleted by the List Admin] ;-)
