Hello all, I just joined the group. Here is our story: We are a family of English and Portuguese speaking folks. Many speak both, some only speak one or the other.
I always thought that when I had a child I would raise them speaking both from the start so they can communicate well with everyone. That is extremely important for us. So life throws us a curve ball and we are now in the process of adopting from Russia! We are very excited about it. We are likely to get a toddler between 1 and 2 years old. The whole family is excited but the "Portuguese only" family members are already streessing about the child learning to speak Portuguese. We live in the USA so the English part is easy. I am focused on transitioning the child from Russia to USA and his/her new family. As well as getting them started in English. (Dad only speaks English). When should I start the Portuguese? Intuition tells me to wait for some adjustment to new life in USA but I know the longer I wait the harder it will be to get into the other language. All my family members who were successful in this endeavor of multilingual munchkins started with both languages from day 1 with their bio children. So I am a bit lost on what to do. Note: I am learning a bit of Russian to help during the first few months. Thank you for your recommendations. Celeste Visit http://www.multilingualmunchkins.com.
