Regarding Brion (Ramsey, as you probably know, Brion's been here for some time <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Brion_Vibber_Day>), he and TheDJ have been the primary maintainers of the playback and transcoding software on Commons for video and audio. I think he was mainly drawing people on the list into the discussion. I'll forward the other thread from multimedia-team for convenience.
