Mike,

Let me ask you a simple question. How do you access a COM component over the Internet?

Will I be able to access a COM component created by you on your server from my PC over 
http directly?

That's where Web Services come in. All you have to do is create a Web Service, which 
for all you know, may just be a wrapper around your COM component that can be used by 
me (or anyone) over the Internet and make use of your COM component, although not 
directly.

Security can be implemented in Web Services in many ways. There is SSL, cryptography, 
custom SOAP Extentions, Digital Certificates etc.
