Do you mean DSN or DNS.

Your Mail subject says DSN. - DSN is a Data-Source Name
which is required (or not required) depending on your implementation of SQL
Server for an asp application.

Alternately if your talking about DNS. - Domain Name
Server, then that is a TCP/IP concept - Mainly a service which translates an IP
into a friendly Domain Name.
In a TCP/IP network (The Internet is a TCP/IP network) all
destination servers or Workstations are identified by IP addresses.

Like for eg. if you want to go to the vsnl site, to
actually go there you have to type the right IP address. http://203.200.237.12/
but since we
humans can't remember that many ip addresses of all the
website , there is a directory which translates these IP
addresses into friendly names. So 203.200.237.12 is mapped to www.vsnl.com.
These entries of mapping are stored
on a server called the DNS server.
So when you type in www.vsnl.com, the request first goes to a DNS
server which stores a table which has the entry of www.vsnl.com and the
reference is to the
valid ip, I have stated above. The request is then sent to the appropriate
target server. once the dns name has been resolved.

Hence DNS servers are very useful and essential. but it is
mostly in the scope of your hosting provider. If you are hosting your
application on the Internet with a service provider, then he will update his
DNS
zone or domain entries, which you don't have to worry about. If you are going
to
host it on your INTRANET, and assign a friendly name for your users to
access it, then you have to tell your sys admin to make the appropriate zone
entries in the your local DNS server.

I have tried to explain it simply and not go into
technicals on lookup zone etc. since its more in the area of IT PRO rather than
development.

Hope this helps.
