You most likely do *not* want to use smartcard *contact* readers as a physical access control system (PACS), except in special, very low-volume areas. They tend to be a bit slow to interact with.
Better is to use a dual interface card with a standard RF proximity interface (non-PKI, I might add) for PACS, and PKI keys loaded on a contact chip for logical access control systems (LACS).
Dual cards are also far, far easier to integrate into an existing PACS.Note that the US Fed PIV smartcard is a dual interface card, with the wireless interface intended for PACS.
