thanks a lot for the response... the indentation trick did not work... I
am guessing that the problem that I am seeing is related to the bug that
you mentioned...

Try indenting all the way to the first letter, i.e.:

 - **Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering**, January 2000.

   [[http://www.caltech.edu][California Institute of Technology]],
   Pasadena, USA.

   Thesis title: "Visual input for pen-based computers".

   Thesis advisor: Dr. Pietro Perona.

What you wrote above should still work, though, I think.  There's a
related bug with indentation of lists with more than one line that I'm
(slowly, and as time permits) in the process of fixing.
