Speaking of "where you'd expect it", non-english groups and stylistic use of
articles: What sort name should be use for Japanese groups starting with
"the"? Normally you NEVER see them referred without "the" (at least on
Japanese sites) and, AFAIK, any Japanese would expect to find them near all
other groups starting with "the". Here's a example of such a group in db:

Very true. There are all sorts of weirdness though with how we currently sort all artists by English standards. You'd also expect to find Japanese artists like HY under e (え) and 19 under shi (し) in a record store there. A nice solution if a developer has time for it would be to implement multiple sortnames with a user option to select whether you want to see English sort, Japanese sort, Hebrew sort, etc. so that you could find your example either under S for SCANTY or under さ for THE depending on your preference.
