That's not possible - since you never know what instrument is selected. I recently changed it for 
the additional attribute of "member of band" and "collaboration" relationship 
types though.

Also, the structure here is a little odd. "Dean James performed electric bass guitar 
as a member of The Toy Dolls from 1985 until 1989" works better.

That would of course be a way to work around grammatical mistakes.
