Hi, I admit it, I am the one that kicked off this arguments :) My BLS seems to have caused more than a little controversy. I meant to raise this issue,
but it has been a hell of a week, with job interviews etc.

For my two cents, I am a firm supporter of the "What it says on the cover"
approach. I understand what some people have been saying about the cover
being up to the whim of the graphic designer, but this is really the only
information there is about a track. the designer has to get this information from the band/composer. There is only one better source for this data, and
that is to ask the composer themselves, which is not a very practical
approach.

I also understand that there are times when a studio album may say
cheesecake (feat. Bobby zakton) and a live album might say just say
Cheesecake. In my opinion the musicbrainz titles of these should be EXACTLY
as written, and if people are interested in who features on the track
without the feat. data, they can look at the AR. I also propose that if a
song says Bluebottle (with John Compton drum attack) we should write that,
not change it to Bluebottle (feat. John Compton)

In my opinion using (feat.) where the album cover does not include it is as ugly as appending (live 06-12-04) to tracks.

There is also the issue as whether or not the composer want to acknowledge the fact that someone performed vocals on there track, if they want it out there for everyone to see, to increase sales, they will put it on the cover, if not they will just acknowledge it in the liner notes, which is where we get the data for the advanced relationships.

That is all from me for now, feel free to flame me with your scathing
opinions :D

Do you realise that your POV differs considerably from the official style guidelines? I am not sure what to think of it. The way you present it, I can only conclude that you should

a) seriously challenge the existing guidelines. Quite a lot of them do not follow the "as it's on the cover" principle.
 b) just accept that your personal oppinion does not matter that much.

I hope you do not take this as an aggression towards you. But do you see my problem?

It has taken MB a long time to grow the guidelines into the state they are in now. They form a pretty balanced set. Switching to purely "as it's on the cover" guidelines would make *many* people very unhappy. Look at NadelnderBambus: you will find *both* worlds there, and for a reason!

All I want to say is that the FeaturingArtistStyle is guideline with a long and winded history. You can start to change it, but please do not do so by just setting up a conflicting editing practice. Do so using the paths established in the MB community. And be prepared that path a) means a *lot* of work.
