I would really like something like Discogs, where there's a format (like 
we used to have, e.g. CD, DVD, Vinyl) and then as many format attributes 
as necessary (8cm, DVD-Audio, 12", HDCD, etc).

FWIW, Discogs have CD and CD-R as formats and CD-ROM and HDCD as 
"description" fields (what I just called attributes). They don't seem to 
have CDDA though.
