CDNY has gift certificates, though they have fallen into disuse. A few people bought them for friends, but never very many. One person bought a lot to use instead of money, since her religion prohibits monetary transactions before a certain time. My sense is that people need frequent reminders of their availability if they are to be used much - which can be a challenge when one wants to minimize announcement time and there is frequent volunteer coordinator turnover so people forget. Perhaps putting certificates out on the admission table to remind people of them would be helpful.
