MPD attempts to play mp3 files with 24 bit, if possible. libmad provides 28 bit samples, and MPD 0.13 cut of the lower 12 bits (and adds dithering), while 0.14 cuts off only 4 bits. Given that your sound hardware can play 24 bit.
