There *is* one! It's called msmtp. :) On their wiki, they say "It was designed with Mutt in mind, which is where the M came from".

I agree, as long as it remains optional. In particular, I miss mouse support (e.g. fast scrolling with a mouse). If a GUI is implemented, there should be a way to switch to the text interface (and back to the GUI) without quitting the Mutt session.

Strictly speaking, a GUI is not necessary for fast scrolling; I have scrolling in my terminal Vim, and have had for quite some time. (From what I understand, it's a bit of a beast to do, though.)
