autoconf 2.61 lacks m4_esyscmd_s()
The problem is that AC_INIT() either needs a static argument, or it has to
be computed with m4 macros. The configure.ac is pulling the version out
of $(srcdir)/VERSION, but the m4_esyscmd() does not remove the trailing
newline, so we use m4_esyscmd_s().
This will also affect RHEL/CentOS 6 which ships with autoconf 2.63.
