That said, if your screen is already full (as mine is) and your apps are already the size you want them (as mine are), I'm not sure how any of these really help... other than maybe the tmux solution. But as I say, the OP's reasons may be unrelated, and any of these may or may not address his issue. The functionality the OP is describing is not exactly ground-breaking; it has existed for decades elsewhere, and is kind of nice.
