My sincere apologies for the lack of clarity in my message. My feature
idea is to allow hooks for different maps. In mutt, it is clear which
map is active (as evidenced by the different keybindings). Oftentimes,
I would like to have a different editor depending on which map is
active. Of course, I can use a macro and set the editor to something
else before calling a function. However, there are two issues with
this:

1. often many different functions use $editor. For example, reply,
edit, group reply, list reply, etc. It is annoying to change all of
those and duplication often leads to bugs (in my own settings).

2. it does not always work to set the $editor back to what it was
previously. Thus I have to use the hack in (1) *everywhere*. For a
map-based hook, it would be easier to set it back to normal.

To give an example, if I am in the postpone menu, I would like my
editor to be, e.g. "vim", but in the index map, I would like my editor
to be "gedit".

Please let me know if a better example would make sense or if any
further details would be of interest.

Kind regards and thank you for all of the hard work and ideas.

Xu
