 On my amd64 desktop and i386 laptop, both running 5.8, I have had no core
 dumps for 2 days.  I also applied the patch to OpenBSD - current ( there
 have been no commits to mh.c for 11 months) and I just downloaded 37
 emails without issue.  If this is not fixed entirely, it is a major
 improvement.

 If this is going to be committed to the mutt code base, do you have a
 rough time frame?  I think the bug is relatively rare (how many users
 maintain mh inboxes with 1000+ emails).  It would probably help Stuart
 Henderson, port maintainer, decide whether to apply the patch or wait for
 the next mutt release.
