#3836: New window patches create display bug

After the recent slew of window-changing patches (I've built from tip),
I'm observing a display bug.
When I'm in the index of my INBOX, and hit return, the message under the
cursor is displayed. At the very top of the screen is a line displaying
the sender and the subject (this is because $status_on_top is set).
Expected behavior, and actual behavior prior to the slew of patches: The
very next screen line underneath the status bar is the first header of the
particular message I'm viewing.
Actual (new) behavior: The very next screen line is blank, and the the
headers don't start until the line below the blank one.
