This functionality has always been something for those willing to tinker
with the settings.
Therefore I think it will be ok if this requires some special steps to get
this to work, especially if the alternative means a lot of work and
potentially dangerous messing with openssl.
Maybe someone can take a closer look to make sure this change does not do
any unintended harm, as I imagine it could easily mess with important
functionality in regards to certificate validation.
From my perspective the current patch works ok.
