The default for $thorough_search was changed to "yes" in 1.5.21. This
will definitely slow ~h patterns down. If you turn that option off, do
things improve?
In general, ~h will be much slower because it looks through the message.
If at all possible, it is better to use more specific search patterns such
as ~f ~c ~C ~t, because those are cached in memory.
