alloca() is segfaulting. In the common configuration it's setting
re_max_failures=20,000.
At least on my system, the limit before it segs looks to be about 16,000,
but I don't see why we need to cut it that close.
I'm inclined to set it to 4000. Would any other devs care to comment?
