I use Mutt in exactly this configuration, and it works for me:
set spoolfile="{server}INBOX"
set folder="{server}mail"
If I change to the folder "!", I switch to my inbox. If I change to the
folder "=folder", I change to "{server}mail/folder". It works great.
Mutt 0.96.1.
