"--" explained

Hi ALL  
        I was wondering if someone could point out the syntax in the
muttrc file for using the "--" command to cut oout signatures?
Ive loked in my muttrc but cant find it.
also
how does one use the underline? as in ^^^^
any info would be much appreciated
