not sure if this is your problem but it has the same symptoms as I had.

Basically its a sendmail issue which you can fix by installing a program 
called ssmtp - have a search at www.freshmeat.net.  This can be installed 
with 'make install-sendmail' and it acts in sendmails place to send your 
mail from mutt and you can use either fetchmail or mutts retreival feature 
for getting your email if its a pop account.
