What if you create a small sample muttrc with no folder-hooks or sort
command in it and start mutt with -F samplerc?
Can you execute folder-hooks then? You should check wether there is a
default muttrc somewhere (/usr/local/etc/Muttrc:/etc/Muttrc) which
could have silly entries.
