.saves-hostname-pid files

Why do I get a whole bunch of .saves-<hostname>-<pid> files created in
my home directory? Each is a text file pointing to a file in /tmp with
mutt in the name.

I use xemacs as my editor - is this an issue with emacs or a problem
with my mutt configuration?
