Why doesn't xterm refresh?

Now that I've switched completely to Mutt, I've noticed that my xterm
doesn't refresh for each screen, and I'm often left with stray
characters from the previous screenful.

Is this Mutt-related? If so, is there something I need to do to Mutt?
