I'm using xterm XFree86 3.3.6(88c) currently, with $TERM set to
xterm-xf86-v33 from ~/.Xresources:

        #ifdef COLOR
        *customization: -color
        XTerm*termName: xterm-xf86-v33
        #endif

Works like a charm.
