Your suggestion contradicts to the assumption,
ie the mailbox being non-empty.  what gives?

Oh - Siemens..  no further questions.

Anyway, I have been opening folders
with more than one instance of mutt
and making changes - the locking
works and I have not lost one mail.  *shrug*
(at least not since some version 0.5x where
 one version screwed up at some point.)
