The 'USER: unknown' bit makes me think you should try just:

set pop_user = "jerryvb"

Otherwise the POP-server thinks you're trying to log in as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@pop3.ispwest.com.

Mind you, I'm just guessing here... Anyway, hope this helps.
