I just upgraded from mutt 0.89 (yes, a little bit dusty :-) ) to 1.3.28
and found a threading bug:

I have a colleague who is using zmail, which generates both:
'In-Reply-To' and 'References' header. Mutt sorts mails from this MUA in a
wrong way, I see threads of mails which has nothing to do with each other.

A typical zmail header (cutout) looks like this:

        In-Reply-To: Ulli Horlacher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
                "Re: ssh und zlib" (Mar 12, 13:56)
        References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
                <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
        X-Mailer: Z-Mail (5.0.0 30July97)

This looks weired, but is correct for RFC822.

I assume mutt (mis)interprets the mail-address in the In-Reply-To header as a
MID.

I could set up a procmail rule like:

        :0 f
        * ^References: <
        * ^In-Reply-To: [^<]
        | formail -R In-Reply-To X-In-Reply-To

But this does not help me with the zillions of old mails I have in my LOT
of mailbox files. I would have to convert them manually.

Can I convince mutt to ignore the In-Reply-To header if there is a
References header?

mutt 0.89 does not show this threading bug.
