by setting "alternates" mutt knows your email addresses - and therefore can tell you in the folder index whether the mails are personal, or simplec CCed to you, or not addresses to you at all (see "to_chars"). it also means that mutt can remove your addresses from the recipient list when you group-reply to messages (see "me_too" - which needs a reference to "alternates"). some mails might be sent via mailing lists and will be "flagged" with "L" - but this requires that you tell mutt about the list addresses with "lists" or "subscribe".
