caching headers, helps.  I don't know if it will solve all your
problems, however.  Check out the header_cache option in the manual.
You'll be caching message headers locally.  

It would be nice if "All Mail" could be ignored, but I haven't figured
out how to do that.  You can't unsubscribe from it.
