  Yes, and IIUC it’s common practice.
  
  Just set folder to the (local or remote) directory that contains
your mailboxes. This directory is what ‘=’ or ‘+’ characters will
expand to when you are referring to a mailbox. You can still refer to
$HOME with ‘~’.

  Check the “Mailbox Shortcuts” section of the manual for other
similar shortcuts. If this is not enough, you may use macros.
