Thanks, Tim.  I don't have a Time Machine backup of 10.6.2, but running
locate I find copies of libncurses.5...dylib in /Developer/SDKs for 10.6.

The have substantially different sizes and earlier mod dates than the ones
in /usr/lib. After I have a cup of coffee I'll try them.
