So, this line works, but you want to use the shorthand =reference,
=mutt-users, etc?  Or neither works?

You should be able to use:

folder imaps://imap.gmail.com:993/
mailboxes +INBOX "+[Gmail]/Sent Mail" "+[Gmail]/Drafts" +bhakti ...

although I've never tried with gmail and am not sure whether there are
problems with "[Gmail]" or with spaces.
