Thanks, Gary. I've managed to work out the column layout issue. The
remaining issue is that gnus shows me bold, italic and colored text,
while mutt does not. You mentioned that the -dump option suppresses
color information, and I'm guessing it suppresses font variations
also, so the output is really purely plain text.

I do have macros defined to pipe a message through MHonArc and then
to lynx or to some other browser, but I'd really prefer to keep
everything "in place" inside mutt's display, without chaining off to
some other program. (I'm not sure if lynx's display is any better or
worse than w3m's. I haven't done the comparison.)
