Thanks, Daniel. I compiiled it with SSL and it's working great now. FWIW, I found some scattered information online that people have been having problems for a long time with Mutt from the Debian repos. Seems like Debian compiles for gnutls and not openSSL due to licensing reasons, but also that some providers' SSL/TLS implementation doesn't play well with gnutls. One thing that stumped me, though, and that I didn't find online, was that I needed to install libssl-dev. I had gotten compile errors without it saying that it couldn't find the shared openssl libraries, even if I added in the path; installing libssl-dev solved that.
