After repeated attempts, I finally got Homebrew to download, build and
install mutt with the sidebar patch enabled. At least, that's what I
thought I did, and mutt doesn't complain about the
sidebar_... variables in my .muttrc file. And if I do the mutt -v
command, the last line of output says:

patch-1.5.22.sidebar.gentoo-openbsd

But I don't see any sidebar. I've set sidebar_visible to yes, but no
sidebar appears. I also defined some keys to toggle sidebar
visibility:

macro index b '<enter-command>toggle sidebar_visible<enter><refresh>'
macro pager b '<enter-command>toggle sidebar_visible<enter><redraw-screen>'

but they have no effect.

Any ideas? I've been using mutt for years without the sidebar, but it
seems like a useful feature.

Thanks!
