sidebar_format Not Showing Number of Unread Emails

If I use

        set sidebar_format = '%B%* %N'

correctly shows unread counts for all mailboxes:

        set sidebar_format = '%B%* %?N%N'

I have a small issue with sidebar_format that I cannot really sort out. If I set this sidebar_format Mutt highlights the folder with unread messages, but does not show the number, but no count at all: I cannot make it work to only show the number for the mailboxes count >0. I have also tried to the same effect. The mail_check_stats variable is set as it is supposed to be. This is with Mutt 2.1.5 (see below). The same seems to happen with Mutt 1.13.2, so I really think that I have messed up, but I do not see where.
