AFAIK mutt is single-threaded, and the check for new mail is implemented as just one part of the main event loop in the index, which is suspended when you detour for the browser or the pager. This is definitely true for neomutt; I am not following classic mutt development closely enough to be 100% sure. So, unfortunately, I don't think this is possible completely within mutt. But I, too, would love it if it were possible. -- Ian
