My plan was to use mvpmc and my Linux box to serve up all my multimedia needs
(except audio, for which I use a Squeezebox with slimserver), I haven't
gotten there yet. It works well with MythTV, but I've had a little success
with other media. I tried some test XVid files with VLC on the server, but
they wouldn't play - apparently some kind of transcoding problem, since they
play okay on the server. A test DivX file did play through the MVP, but with
a lot of pixellation artifacts. And, it turned out that the JPEG files in my
digital photo collection were apparently too big for mvpmc to handle, and it
choked on them. So, the compromise was to run the Hauppauge software on my
wife's Windoze box, since it handles the JPEGs and video files without any
problem. This is a minor nuisance, since, unlike my Linux box, hers is not
on 24/7.

The mvpmc emulation mode comes in handy, allowing access to both servers
from mvpmc. However, it didn't work at first. I put '--emulate
192.168.1.5' (the ip of my wife's system) on the mvpmc command line, but when
I selected emulation mode from the menu, it would only display "Connecting to
192.168.1.5' very briefly, and then return to showing the menu. Tracing the
ethernet traffic, I found that the MVP was not in fact trying to connect to
192.168.1.5 at all - it was sending a broadcast packet to UDP port 16881, and
getting a reply from my Linux box (192.168.1.1), and then not getting any
further. To prevent this from happening, I had to kill mvprelay on the Linux
box, and then the connection to the other box would proceed, and emulation
mode seems to work. :-) But then I have to remember to restart mvprelay if I
want to reboot the MVP.

So (finally), my question: is there a cleaner way to make mvpmc work with the
two servers?
