Okay, after those changes, my config file is
TZ=PST8PDTDT,M4.1.0/2,M10.5.0/2
export TZ
rdate -s 192.168.73.14
mvpmc -f /etc/helvR10.fnt -s 192.168.73.14 &
mvmpc -c 192.168.73.14 &
Hmm, that didn't quite work either, instead of the guide showing Jan,01, it
now shows Dec,31 and the time of 1600, even though it's 2125.
Telnet to the mvp shows
# date
Wed Dec 31 18:07:22 CST 1969
tried to connect to an external ntp site
Usage: rdate [-sp] HOST
# rdate -sp pool.ntp.org
rdate: Unable to connect to remote host (195.244.96.13): Connection refused
this command runs successfully on my windows machine, but not the linux
machines... anyhow after mucking about, I just adding the ntp server option
in my dhcp server config and disabled the rdate line in the dongle config
file. That seems to work fine and most of the schedule and program
information now shows up, and the correct date and time info shows up in the
guide.

As above

I can use channel up/down to get where I want to be, but if I want to go
direct to a channel, that's where it fails. I seem to remember this problem
occuring before with the MVP and with other front ends, but don't remember
what the issue was.
Hmm, after setting the time server in the dhcp options, both of my mvp's work
fine, I notice that now if the time is not set correctly, then I get the
problem behaviour above where I can't directly change to a channel, with the
proper time set, it works fine.
Also noticed that running live tv on 2 mvp's concurrently causes the backend
to die after about 5 minutes ;-(
